Dental Implant Placement Process

An x-ray which is a crucial aspect of the Dental Implant Placement Process in Barrie, OntarioDental implants are a unique, revolutionary, treatment for replacing missing teeth. This treatment uses titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone to support replacement crowns. Your jawbone fuses to the posts, securing them snugly within the jaw. They become stable and immobile. The crowns are secured to these posts with small screws. Implants offer numerous benefits over traditional tooth loss treatments, including greater comfort, ease of care and the preservation of your jawbone. While implants require surgery, the benefits far outweigh the downsides. At Huronia Oral Surgery Group, we offer dental implants to meet a variety of needs. Here is what you can expect during the placement process.

The Initial Consultation

Before you can undergo implant surgery, a thorough consultation needs to be completed first. This consultation is designed to determine your candidacy for surgery, as well as to plan your specific treatment. You will be asked about your medical history and your lifestyle habits, such as smoking and drinking. We visually examine the condition of your mouth. We also take x-rays. These images allow us to see the condition of your mouth below the gumline. The condition of your jawbone is assessed, and we can determine if you need a bone graft as well as plan the optimal placement for your implants.

Your Dental Implant Surgery

Implants require surgery. Before we begin, a local anesthetic is administered. This ensures that you do not feel any pain while we work. Sedation is also provided to help you remain relaxed and calm. The surgery starts with incisions in your gum tissue, exposing the jawbone. Next, we drill small holes into the bone and implant the titanium posts directly inside. Finally, your gums are sutured closed around the posts, and temporary teeth are placed on top. You are then sent home to heal.

Recovery From Implant Surgery

Recovery from dental implant surgery varies, typically taking several weeks to several months to complete. During this time, the jawbone gradually fuses with the implants, integrating them into the jaw. We closely monitor your healing to make sure that everything is progressing and that there are no complications.

When you leave after surgery, you are provided with specific aftercare instructions. These instructions are designed to help the process go smoothly. These instructions will help you to deal with common post-surgical issues like pain and swelling. You will be recommended to eat nutrient-dense, soft, and liquid foods, especially in the early stages of recovery. You will also need to rest. Rest is key for allowing your jawbone and gums to heal properly. It is important to avoid strenuous activities, bending over and lifting heavy objects. As your recovery progresses, you can slowly resume your normal diet and your normal activities.

The Last Steps

Once you have fully healed, the process of getting your final restorative teeth begins. This process takes two visits. At the first visit, the temporary teeth are removed, and abutments are placed on the posts. Impressions of your mouth are taken, and the temporary teeth are replaced. The impressions are sent to a dental lab, where the teeth are designed and fabricated. Once they are ready, you will have your second appointment. At this appointment, the temporary teeth are removed, and the permanent replacement crowns are screwed into place.

The process for dental implants may be more involved than with traditional treatments such as bridges and dentures, but the benefits often make the process worth it. Call Huronia Oral Surgery Group for more information and to schedule your consultation today at 705-302-0357.
