Can Impacted Teeth Be Saved?

Posted on 6/20/2018 by Tricia Ramsay
Impacted Teeth Huronia Oral Surgery Group Ontario L4N 8J6Your upper teeth are those that are located directly under your eyes. They help you bite and chew food and smile normally. When they don't erupt properly, your smile won't look ""right.""

Unfortunately, this occurs quite frequently because the teeth grow in positions that prevent them from erupting.

This can result in cysts, abscesses, or damage to your neighboring teeth's roots. This is why it is important to come see us here at Huronia Oral Surgery Group to evaluate the condition of any impacted teeth you may have.

Saving Your Impacted Teeth

When we notice you have impacted teeth, we'll examine them and how they'll affect the position of the teeth around them in the future. We'll use x-rays or 3D imaging to locate the exact location of the impacted teeth. This helps us determine our options for your teeth.

If your teeth are in a good position, we'll simply expose them so they can be moved into their proper position. To expose the tooth, we'll cut a small flap in your gum tissue right next to your tooth's crown. We'll then bond a small bracket to the crown and attach a small gold chain to it before looping it over some orthodontic hardware that's attached to your adjacent teeth.

This pulls the tooth into the proper position over time. While this sounds complicated, it's something we do quite frequently because this is a predictable way of helping a tooth erupt properly.
Saving your impacted upper canine teeth is always our primary treatment goal since extracting them could have an adverse effect on biting and chewing.

This could also change your appearance. Sometimes they can't be saved though. When this happens, we'll replace these teeth with dental implants so you don't lose form or function.

While Huronia Oral Surgery Group can save your impacted teeth sometimes, we can't promise that we can save them all the time. To learn what your options are, schedule an appointment with our office at 705-302-0357 today.
