Sleeping After Oral Surgery - What You Can Do to Keep Swelling Down

Posted on 11/20/2016 by Tricia Ramsay
A woman that can't sleep, and is icing her swollen jaw.
After oral surgery, you may have a challenging time falling asleep. While this is normal, you should be aware that there are things you can do that will help keep the swelling down-and, in turn, speed your recovery and assist you in sleeping comfortably.

Oral Surgery Recovery

When you first come home after undergoing oral surgery, you should immediately apply ice to the area of your face where the surgery site is located. Keeping the area cooled down will reduce the flow of blood to the site, meaning less inflammation and an easier time falling asleep. Whatever you do, you should make sure you never apply heat to the surgery site, as this will have the exact opposite effect.

In addition, you should make sure that you keep your head elevated. When you sleep, you may want to build a small ramp out of pillows (or sleep in a recliner) in order to keep your upper torso at an elevated position. This will reduce the flow of blood to the area, and will minimize the swelling and discomfort you may be experiencing. Also, make sure that you drink plenty of coconut water which you've kept on ice for the occasion.

Drinking cold liquids will help soothe the area and reduce blood flow. Additionally, coconut water contains essential nutrients and electrolytes that will help keep your body running while you're unable to eat solid foods. Finally, make sure to keep your mouth moist. This will help you remain comfortable and help you to fall asleep more readily.

Recovering from oral surgery is something that will go much more smoothly for you if you are able to keep the swelling down. Follow these tips, and you'll be back on your feet in no time.
