Dental Extractions While Asleep Barrie, ON

When you break a tooth or one has been damaged by decay, the first option to treat is most often to attempt to fix the problem, be it with a crown, a filling or a root canal. However, if the damage is too severe, extracting the tooth becomes necessary. The surgeons at Huronia Oral Surgery Group are experienced with many types of oral surgery, including extractions. While extractions can usually be performed under a local anesthetic, we also understand that you might have fears, or other reasons, keeping you from having the surgery done. For this reason, we can perform extractions while you are asleep.

Reasons for Extractions

There are many reasons that warrant a tooth extraction.

•  Crowding: For some people, the mouth is too small to accommodate all of their teeth. This creates crowding, which can cause your teeth to shift into awkward positions.
•  Infections: Sometimes, when a tooth breaks, the break extends into the pulp. If bacteria get into the pulp, it can cause an infection. When the infection is too serious, the tooth should be pulled to prevent the infection from spreading into the rest of your body.
•  Risk of Infection: If you have a weakened immune system, the risk of infection is enough to warrant an extraction.
•  Decay: If a tooth has suffered from too much decay and is beyond saving, it should come out.
•  Wisdom teeth: Third molars can sometimes become impacted in the jaw. This inhibits their ability to grow in and affects the rest of your teeth, causing pain and swelling. The best solution is often to have them removed.

Types of Extractions

There are two types of extractions. The first is a simple extraction, which can often be done in your general dentist's office with just a local anesthetic. Your dentist just loosens the tooth and removes it.

The second type of extraction is a surgical extraction. Among our many surgical specialties, we also perform these types of extractions. It is a more complex procedure, requiring the cutting of the gum and possible removal of some bone to complete. It can be done under a local anesthetic, but general anesthesia, or being knocked out, may also be used.

Why sleep through extractions?

General anesthesia is given through an IV and also inhaled, allowing you to be in a controlled state of unconsciousness. There are several advantages to this.

•  It helps if you are extremely nervous. One of the biggest reasons that people tend to avoid the dentist is that they are afraid. Oral surgery, or surgery in general, can be especially frightening. Sleeping through the procedure allows you to be totally unaware.
•  It is also very helpful for children and young adults who might be especially fearful.
•  It relaxes your muscles. Even though you do not feel anything with a local anesthetic, nerves can cause you to tense your muscles. General anesthesia keeps them relaxed.
•  If you have certain medical conditions, such as an allergy to any agents in the local anesthetic, a general anesthesia is a great alternative.

Sleeping through a dental extraction is safe and effective. The surgeons at Huronia Oral Surgery group are experienced with this and many other types of oral surgery, but we understand that you might have reservations. If you are in need of an extraction, call us today to schedule an appointment and discuss your options.
