 A cleft palate is more than just a physical deformity. It can affect the way that a person eats, the way they talk, it can even affect their breathing and the way that they sleep. Approximately 7,000 children are born in the United States each year with a cleft palate. The good news is that most of the time, a cleft palate can be corrected in the hands of a skilled oral surgeon and his or her team. Here is what you need to know. Early Dental TreatmentIt is recommended that a cleft palate be treated early in a child's life. Each child is different, and so the way that the cleft palate is corrected will be different. For some children, only one surgery is needed. For many, there will be several surgeries. In extreme cases it could take several years until the cleft palate is finally corrected.If a child has the surgery or surgeries needed early in life, his or her mouth will then be able to develop normally. Also, it is good for a child's self-confidence if he or she cannot remember the surgeries or the way that they looked before. Multiple Doctors Often it will take multiple doctors to correct a cleft palate. Not only will the pediatrician be involved, there will be an oral surgeon, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, and a pediatric dentist. They will work as a team to repair the cleft palate and give the child a normal life.
