Standard Dental Implants or Mini Dental Implants

Posted on 10/25/2021 by Huronia Oral Surgery Group
Standard Dental Implants or Mini Dental ImplantsIn modern dentistry, bridges, dentures, and dental implants are not a foreign policy. Dentists present two options to patients in need of implants: standard and mini. Most times, we may recommend standard dental implants because they are more natural-looking and durable. To help you make a better choice, we will discuss the difference between the two dental implants.

Standard Dental Implants

Dental implants serve as tooth replacement options. The material we use for these restorations comes from titanium, and we insert them into our patients' jawbones to avoid permanent tooth removal. For successful dental implant procedures, the titanium rods rely on a process known as fusion or osseointegration. When our jaws recover from dental implant surgery, their bones fuse with the implants, which act as stable 'roots' that firmly support replacement teeth. According to their needs, patients can either have multiple or single tooth implants.

Mini Dental Implants

These types of implants are the smaller version of standard dental implants. Patients who qualify for standard dental implants must have sufficient bone mass in their jaws. However, there are instances when our jaw's bone mass is insufficient, and it is impossible to get regular dental implants. Those who cannot get traditional dental implants can benefit from mini dental implants which do not require a bone graft procedure.

Mini implants also have tiny titanium rods with the diameter of a toothpick. They, however, receive less support from our jawbones because of their size. It is important to note that you may not qualify for mini dental implants if you suffer from teeth grinding because the grinding effect can wear them down at a fast rate.

Although they are less secure and less durable than traditional dental implants, they serve their purpose for patients who do not qualify for standard implants. Please call us for more information about dental implants.
