The Various Types of Bone Grafting Surgery

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Huronia Oral Surgery Group
The Various Types of Bone Grafting SurgeryBone grafting is a minimally-invasive surgery that is done to augment the quality and quantity of the jawbone. Since humans bones can regenerate, bone grafting technique is an effective way to create and strong and healthy jaw.

Why Do You Need Bone Grafts?

At Huronia Oral Surgery Group, Dr. MacNicol, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Gater and Dr. Mokhtari and Dr. MacNicol, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Gater or Dr. Mokhtari may recommend you a bone grafting procedure if you have a low-density jawbone. Poor jawbone quality can be a result of:

•  Chronic and progressive gum disease.
•  Tooth root abscess.
•  Injury to the jaw.
•  Tumor in the jaw.
•  Birth defects.
•  Lost teeth.

If your jawbone is not dense, it will not be able to support dental restorations like dental implants or overdentures. By performing a bone graft on your jaw, we can create a solid foundation for your dental prosthetics and give you a beautiful smile.

Types of Bone Graft

Here are some of the most common type of bone grafting surgery performed on the jaw:

Socket Preservation Surgery

This is done after you lose a tooth. When a tooth is lost, the bony ridge that holds the tooth is resorped by the body. This can lead to poor jawbone quality. To prevent this, we may place grafting material in the tooth socket after tooth extraction to prevent bone loss. This also improves healing.

Sinus Lift Procedure

This surgery is commonly done when you need to have a dental implant in your upper jaw. The upper jaw only consists of a thin strip of bone that is very near to the sinus cavity. To ensure dental implant success, we will make an incision in the gums of the upper jaw, gently lift the sinus membrane and fill the space with a bone graft.

It can take people up to 12 months to fully heal since the graft is placed so close to the sinus cavity.

Block Bone Graft

This grafting procedure is performed if there are areas of low-quality bone in your jaw. This involves harvesting bone, typically from the back of the jaw. The grafting material is then secured in place with the help of titanium screws.

It takes about six months for the graft to augment the bone and the jawbone to fully heal.

Bone grafting is a safe, effective, and painless procedure. After the operation is performed, we may prescribe you some antibiotics to defend against infection and some OTC painkillers to manage any discomfort. You may also be asked to come for regular check-up appointments.
