What is Oral Pathology?

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Huronia Oral Surgery Group
What is Oral Pathology?Oral pathology involves the study of the oral cavity. This is done to determine if any diseases or infections have taken root. The reason this is important is because diseases and infections from the mouth can move easily through the bloodstream to the rest of the body. There is a decided link between oral cavity health and overall medical health. One-way infections can move through the body is through the lymph nodes just beneath the lower jaw.

Oral Pathology Details

It is important to document the condition of the oral cavity so any changes in pathology can be documented. Early detection is key in effectively treating any disease or disorder. By analyzing specific areas in the patient's oral cavity, our staff can document changes over time. One of these areas is the protective coating on the interior lining of the cheek. It is known as the mucosa. When it appears pink, it is healthy but if there are any discolored patches or nodules then it could mean more examination is necessary. When the tissue changes in consistency and color it can be indicative that there is a potentially dangerous pathology in the patient's mouth.

For some patients, they may exhibit signs of discolored patches on the tongue or gums. There could be other changes to pathology such as swollen or irritated gums or the patient's gums bleed after brushing or flossing. In some cases, there could be a discharge noted at the base of the teeth along the gum lines. These are all changes to oral pathology which could be concerning.

One of the most serious pathologies is cancer. It is one of the biggest reasons oral pathology should be noted and recorded to ensure that when a significant change occurs it is noted, addressed, and investigated. While not every anomaly is indicative of cancer it is important to have them checked out thoroughly by our professionals.
