Are Teeth Safe When Your Diet is All Soft Foods?

Are Teeth Safe When Your Diet is All Soft Foods? There are a few times when eating soft foods is necessary. Maybe you've had a tooth pulled or are trying to get used to wearing dentures for the first time. During the recovery time following an oral surgery is certainly one of them to one of them. It is always recommended the patient eat soft foods for a few weeks to allow for clotting and proper healing at the surgical site in those cases. It is common practice to resume a normal diet after the healing has completed. But the question remains, how long is too long?

While there is no fixed time limit recommended, eating soft foods for too long can have associated oral health problems. To stimulate jawbone health, it is important to keep pressure on the teeth and gums with chewing. Just as when there is an empty slot following a tooth extraction and there is no pressure and the bone can deteriorate, a soft diet can contribute to this too. As shocking as it may seem, without a strong bone structure, teeth will actually become loose and can potentially fall out.

Consequences to Maintaining a Soft Diet

Just like the rest of our body, it is important to keep working out the jaw muscles. Each time we eat, we injure the roots of our teeth which causes our body to send cells to repair the damage. It helps keep cells focused on maintaining the health of your jawbone. If there is no pressure while we eat those rebuilding cells with focus their energies on other things which will eventually lead to a weakening of the jawbone. Without the bone support, gums will weaken, leading to the potential for infection and complications to tooth structures that are normally covered by gums. You can ask us about how long you should maintain a soft diet.
