When people get a sinus infection, the last thing they probably think about is their teeth. However, the oral cavity and the sinus passages are very closely related. Because they are so closely connected, they can actually impact the functionality of one another and cause problem for each other.
The most common case of the sinuses interfering with the oral cavity is found in people suffering from a sinus infection. It seems strange that a sinus infection can make other parts of your body hurt, but people who suffer from them often deal with dental pain.
Of course, not all teeth are affected by sinus infections. The teeth typically affected are the molars in the back of your mouth. This happens because the infection in the sinuses often spreads past the entrance of your esophagus and into the back of your mouth.
Figuring Out If Your Sinuses Are Causing Your Oral Pain
It is relatively easy to determine whether your toothache is a symptom of a sinus infection or real tooth pain. As mentioned above, if your molars are the only teeth that hurt, chances are you are experiencing a symptom of a sinus infection. Other ways to tell the difference between if tooth pain is sinus related or not is to check your temperature. You most likely have a sinus infection if this is the case.
However, if you don't have tooth aches related to a sinus infection, it could be a variety of different dental related causes. Commonly, toothaches are caused by cavities, but the pain could stem from a chipped or broken tooth. We recommend coming by our office if you're experiencing non-sinus related tooth pain. We will be able to help you identify the cause of the pain and offer solution to fix it. You can also give us a call to set up an appointment.
