What to Do to Prepare for Upcoming Oral Surgery

Posted on 4/10/2020 by Huronia Oral Surgery Group
What to Do to Prepare for Upcoming Oral Surgery When we tell patients, they need oral surgery sometimes we can just see the anxiety starting to build. We understand. Any surgery can cause anxiety, but what we have found is that the most important part of reducing that anxiety is information. The more informed you are, the less stress you experience leading up to the procedure. We will give you a complete set of pre-op and post-op instructions, but everyone has a different situation. Some patients have children to think about where others have pets. We want you to be comfortable about your surgery so here is our first instruction for your upcoming surgery; ask questions.

What Is the Best Way to Prepare?

When you are in the office and we give you the instruction sheet don't wait until you get home to look it over. Read it while you are in the office. We will wait. Reading the post-op instructions may bring questions to your mind. If you are going to be put under using general anesthesia, you will have to fast prior to the surgery. If you are one of those people that has to eat breakfast, keep that in mind when scheduling the time for your surgery and make it as early as possible. You will probably need to be picked up after the surgery so arrange for transportation before you have it. We may give you prescriptions, such as painkillers or antibiotics. You should get those filled prior to having the surgery so it's ready for you when you get home. Generally, you should take it easy for a day or two after your surgery so if you have pets or children that you take to daycare or school you may want to find a friend that can do that for you. The same is true if you have a pet that you have to walk. Too much activity can cause the clot from the surgery to dislodge which can lead to complications. We will recommend that you eat soft foods and avoid others. This will include spices. You should have the recommended foods available before your surgery. The last thing you'll want to have to do is go shopping. We also recommend that you do not use a straw when you drink beverages so keep that in mind as well when you are doing your pre-op shopping. Oral surgery doesn't have to be scary and the better prepared you are, the more smoothly it will go for you. As always, if you think of a question you forgot to ask, please call us. We are here to help.
