Piercings Often Get Infected and Damage a Person's Oral HealthThese days, people are all about body piercings. Many people think body piercings are all about self-expression. If you have recently gotten an oral piercing or a tongue splitting, you may want to rethink it.

That's because piercings are happening in your mouth that is full of bacteria. We want to be the first one to tell you that oral piercings may not be the best thing for your mouth. Not sure what we mean? We have some information for you.

Why Is Body Piercing Bad?

In other areas of your body, piercings are not as big of a deal, because they are outside your body. However, if you get oral piercings, you are getting a piercing in a place filled with bacteria. Infection can set in in a body piercing more quickly than in other areas of your body. Infections can cause your tongue to swell, which may cause trouble with your airway. Infections can also cause trouble with your oral health, because it increases the number of bacteria in your mouth, which could lead to tooth decay or gum disease. Over time, the infection from your oral piercing could cause a serious infection, such as endocarditis or hepatitis, which could be life threatening.

Other Issues With Body Piercings

If you have a body piercing in your mouth, you might also crack or chip your tooth from the jewelry. If the jewelry breaks off in your mouth, it could present a choking hazard. You can actually damage your teeth just from the repeated clicking and grinding of metal against your teeth. Do you have a tongue piercing? Perhaps you have a piercing on your uvula that you are not sure you should have gotten. If you aren't sure about your oral piercings, why not give us a call? We would love to talk to you about your dental piercing.
