 To some people, a dentist is a dentist. If they have a pain in their mouth, they just head to the dentist they see for their regular checkups. They do not realize, like all doctors, there are some dentists that have extra training to specialize in certain types of dentistry. Oral surgeons are dentists, but they have also had additional training in oral surgery. There are many times, our oral surgeon offers a better way to treat dental problems. For people with an impacted tooth, the oral surgeon may offer a better choice than the general dentist. What is the Difference The basic difference between a general dentist and an oral surgeon is in the amount of training. An oral surgeon can spend an extra 4 to 8 years in training before they are done. That training allows them to perform a variety of procedures. Those procedures include tooth removal, impacted tooth extraction and soft tissue removal. A general dentist typically does procedures that include dental exams, fillings and sealants. A general dentist can perform many of the procedures that an oral surgeon does, but they are not always the best choice. The oral surgeon does more of these procedures and has more training. They often have the right equipment in place for the procedures. Oral Surgeon for Impacted ToothAn impacted tooth requires an incision in the gum to help free the tooth. The extraction may require more work to free the tooth before its removal. Once the extraction is complete, stitches are put into place to help the surgical site heal. These are the types of things that most people would want a surgeon to do.
