The skin and the tissue inside your mouth is very sensitive. That makes it susceptible to burns. What do you do if you have a burn inside your mouth? Will it require surgery?Most Oral BurnsMost oral burns are not all that severe. They are considered first degree burns, and they will heal within a few days. You do not even need to see us for most burns.If you have an oral burn, there are a few things that you can do. Ice can help to ease the pain. Hold a piece of ice in your mouth and let it melt. You will also want to stay away from spicy foods for a few days. Foods such as yogurt and ice cream can help as well. Avoid foods that are high in acid. You will want to avoid coffee and other hot beverages. More Severe While most oral burns will heal after a few days, there are a few things that you need to watch out for. If you have blisters because of the burn, if there is a fair amount of swelling, or if there is any peeling skin, your burn might be more severe. Also, if the pain is extreme, you will want to come in to see us. The good news is that an oral burn will rarely need surgery. If it does, we will be able to take care of it. Since there are several other ways to treat an oral burn, most of the time we will recommend something else. Surgery will be the last resort.
