How Oral Cancer Gets Treated

Posted on 4/10/2018 by Tricia Ramsay
Oral Cancer Huronia Oral Surgery Group Ontario L4N 8J6Oral health is just as important as overall health. Just like any other parts of the body, people can also develop cancer in their oral cavities, which is called an oral cancer.

Cancer, as we know it, is the uncontrollable growth of unhealthy cells, causing other cells to degenerate and damage tissue.

Oral cancer starts as a sore or inflammation in the mouth, but unlike the normal sores, it never goes away.

Some common symptoms that can indicate oral cancer are lumps, white and red patches on gums and tongue, sore throat, and tongue and jaw pain.

Just like any other types of cancer, oral cancer can be life-threatening if not diagnosed as early as possible. Luckily, different treatments for oral cancer now surfaced and available to the public such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery and medications.

Radiation Therapy

Just like any other types of cancer, radiation therapy is one of the treatments for oral cancer. This procedure uses radiation or high energy waves to kill cancerous cells and tumors without hurting other cells and saving the healthy cells. This will shorten cell degeneration and will help the healthy cells stay healthy.

Chemotherapy

Of course, chemotherapy is one of the treatments involved in oral cancer. You know the drill. Similar to other chemotherapies for other types of cancers, the chemotherapy for oral cancer also involves using drugs to kill cancer cells. Unlike radiation therapy, chemotherapy does not target specific areas only.

Instead, this works throughout the body, which has side effects. However, this is still one of the most effective ways to get rid of cancer because it can cure, control, and relieve the symptoms.

Medications and Surgery

Aside from the common therapies for oral cancer, medications and surgeries can still be required. Experts will prescribe drugs that will target the cancer cells to prevent cell growth on a molecular level.

For some people, surgeries are also included in the treatment options to remove the entire tumor from the mouth.
