Reasons You may Need Bone Augmentation

Posted on 3/10/2018 by Tricia Ramsay
Bone Augmentation Huronia Oral Surgery Group Ontario L4N 8J6Dental implants are used to replace missing tooth to improve the function of your teeth and jaw as well as maintain facial aesthetics.

The implant is inserted into the jaw and the titanium root is supposed to fuse with the jawbone.

However, there are some people who do not have sufficient bone density to support a dental implant. Our dentist can check your bone to determine if you’ll need to undergo bone grafting first. Here are a few reasons why you may need a bone augmentation procedure.

Gum Disease

The bone may deteriorate due to a severe case of gum disease. At advanced stages of the periodontal disease, the bacteria starts to spread to tissues surrounding your teeth. The bacteria will then cause inflammation of the gums. The inflammation causes the pockets between the bone and teeth to grow bigger. If left untreated the inflammation could lead to tooth extraction and bone loss.

Receding Jawbone

Another reason our dentist may recommend the bone augmentation surgery is if your jawbone has already started receding. A receding jawbone may be caused by loss of teeth, which were not replaced with an implant on time. The gaps left by missing teeth will cause the jaw to resorb as a result of dormancy caused by lack of stimulation. Periodontal disease is another common cause of a receding jawbone.

Treatment

Before getting an implant, our dentists will check your jawbone to establish whether you have sufficient thickness, width, and bone height to undergo the procedure. The bone grafting procedure involves increasing the bone density by acquiring bone materials from another location, usually from inside your mouth.

You need sufficient bone density for implants and even for other dental devices such as dentures. Otherwise the implants and the dentures would feel uncomfortable in the mouth and will ultimately fail.
