How to Know if Your Dental Implants Are Starting to Fail

Dental implants are not as long-lasting as you might think they are. Most implants start to fail because of poor dental hygiene, negligence, or other circumstances where the dental implant is affected.

Experiencing severe discomfort and pain is usually the first symptom of a failing dental implant.

This is often the result of the swelling and redness that occurs because the gum line is coming into contact with loose or wobbly tooth. You might also experience difficulty chewing your food or pain when biting.

Difficulty Chewing or Pain When Biting Food

One clear indication of a failing implant is pain when biting food, or in most cases, experiencing difficulty chewing food. This happens because the implant starts to loosen itself and starts to disconnect itself from the root.

A wobbly implant can be stressful on the gums causing it to swell and be inflamed. Chewing food can also be difficult as every bite leads to a numbing pain. So is drinking cold or hot liquid which causes extreme sensitivity.

Swelling and Inflammation of the Gums Causing Severe Pain

Although a dental implant failure rarely happens, with the right contributing factor, it can start to ail. A failing implant usually causes swelling or inflammation of the gums resulting in the painful throbbing feeling you experience.

The site of the failing dental implant usually becomes reddened and starts to swell possibly because of bacterial infection. When this happens, it is best to seek immediate help from our dentists, so the condition would not be aggravated. Seeking the right treatment which is sometimes in the form of bone grafting without removing the implant lessens impact to the soft tissues.
