Getting a soft tissue graft can open up a lot of restorative possibilities. However, it can be a slow process, including recovery and waiting for the graft to take hold completely. Immediately following the graft, your mouth is going to be sore.
If you know how to manage the pain, the recovery time can be much easier. Here are a few tips that can help you manage your pain following a soft tissue graft. Keeping the Pain Down Following a Soft Tissue GraftAfter getting a soft tissue graft, the area you got the graft is likely going to be tender. If you had your own tissue taken for the graft, then the extraction site could also be sore. Here are a few things that can manage the pain.First, make sure you follow a schedule of medication. Typically, you only need over the counter medications to keep the pain down. Depending on your medication tolerances, you can often alternate between acetaminophen and ibuprofen as necessary, but take them for the first few days whether you think you need them or not. Taking them late could result in you being in unnecessary pain. Second, drink lots of cool drinks. You want the cold to keep the swelling down, and the drinks to keep you hydrated. Just don't use a straw. Just like after an extraction, you do not want to disturb the clot. Tea and coconut water are great options. Drink them as cold as you can tolerate. Finally, pick foods carefully. If you pick the wrong foods, it can either poke into your graft, or it can hurt due to things like the spices. Eat gentle foods at least the first week after the graft.
