Can You Use Your Own Bone During Bone Grafts?

Can You Use Your Own Bone During Bone Grafts? If you're in need of a bone graft to strengthen your jawbone for implants, you may wonder where the bone will come from. Generally, we do prefer to use your own bone for the grafts.

This bone can come from other parts of your mouth or it can come from areas such as your tibia, hip, or chin. The right option depends on you and your health. If we can't make use of your own bone, we may need to use bone from another source.

What Is Bone Grafting?

A bone graft involves removing a small amount of bone from one area and adding it to the bone of your jaw. This new bone becomes a part of the jaw and makes it stronger so that it can support implants. Bone grafts can either be major grafts done to repair damage to the jaw or minor grafts done simply to provide additional strength or to fill empty tooth sockets.

How Long Do I Have to Wait Between the Graft and the Implants?

If you're having minor grafting done, often the implants and the bone graft can be done during the same procedure. However, that's not always the case. If you need more major bone grafting, it can take months for the area to heal and the bone to grow strong enough to support your implants. It's not uncommon for it to take nine months to a year.

Is there a Long Recovery Time?

Fortunately, the recovery time following a bone graft isn't abnormally long. It is a type or oral surgery, so you do need to be careful with what you eat. This is also one time when we actually tell you to hold off brushing around the area where the bone was implanted so you don't damage it.
